Watt’s Up? Sheetz Powers Ahead with 50 New EV Chargers

The electric vehicle (EV) market in the United States is at a critical turning point, with rising demand for reliable charging infrastructure and mounting global trade uncertainties threatening the affordability of new battery-electric vehicles. Despite these challenges, an alliance of eight major automakers—BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota—remains steadfast in its commitment to building a robust nationwide EV charging network. Their joint venture, IONNA, is now transitioning from beta testing to full-scale deployment, with a mission to make coast-to-coast EV travel more accessible than ever before.

Among the key players expanding the IONNA network is Sheetz, the beloved restaurant and convenience chain, which has committed to opening 50 IONNA Rechargery locations across the country. With new stations already operational in Springfield and Willoughby, Ohio, as well as Scranton, Pennsylvania, Sheetz is demonstrating its dedication to supporting EV drivers with cutting-edge charging solutions and convenient amenities.

The IONNA Network: A Game-Changer for EV Charging

IONNA has already proven its viability. In 2024 alone, the network facilitated over 4,400 charging sessions, delivering nearly 63,000 kilowatt-hours of energy. As the joint venture moves beyond beta testing, it aims to establish more than 1,000 new charging bays by the end of the year, with a long-term goal of 30,000 ultra-fast chargers nationwide by 2030.

The latest milestone for IONNA took place in Apex, North Carolina, where representatives from all eight automakers gathered for the grand opening of the first-ever IONNA Rechargery. This event, along with the unveiling of IONNA's new headquarters and Customer Experience Lab in Durham, North Carolina, underscores the coalition’s commitment to delivering an innovative and consumer-friendly charging experience.

Why Sheetz?

Sheetz has long been at the forefront of convenience retail, offering travelers a combination of fuel, food, and comfort. Now, with its investment in IONNA Rechargeries, Sheetz is ensuring that EV drivers have access to ultra-fast charging without sacrificing convenience. Each Rechargery location will offer high-speed charging along with Sheetz’s signature selection of made-to-order food, beverages, and clean, well-lit facilities.

The move is part of a broader push to improve EV infrastructure at popular travel stops, allowing drivers to recharge their vehicles while enjoying a seamless and comfortable experience. This initiative will be especially impactful for long-distance travelers and commuters who rely on fast, efficient charging.

The Bigger Picture: A Nationwide Charging Expansion

Beyond Sheetz, IONNA has already contracted over 100 sites nationwide, with new Rechargery locations opening this year in Houston, Texas, and Abilene, Kansas. Six additional sites are currently under construction, and more are in the pipeline. By spring, the IONNA location in Garner, North Carolina, will introduce AI-driven sensor fusion technology, enabling automated checkout-free purchasing through an Amazon partnership—showcasing how innovation is enhancing the EV charging experience.

While the U.S. EV market faces uncertainties from international trade tensions with Canada, Mexico, and China, infrastructure development remains a priority. The IONNA network represents a strategic response to these challenges, ensuring that EV adoption continues to grow despite economic and regulatory hurdles.

Looking Ahead

As Sheetz moves forward with its plan to open 50 IONNA Rechargeries, the company is positioning itself as a key player in the future of American transportation. This collaboration between a major convenience chain and the world’s leading automakers demonstrates that the shift to electric mobility isn’t just about cars—it’s about creating a seamless, driver-friendly ecosystem that makes EV ownership practical and enjoyable.

With Sheetz leading the charge in expanding IONNA's footprint, EV drivers can look forward to more reliable charging options at locations they already know and love. As the network continues to grow, the vision of a fully electrified, road-trip-ready America is closer to becoming a reality.
