2025 GR Corolla Debuts Automatic Transmission

2025 GR Corolla Debuts Automatic Transmission

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla is the rally-inspired, turbocharged three-cylinder, all-wheel-drive hot hatch we never knew we wanted from Toyota. Its execution has turned out to be as good as the premise, showcasing Toyota's renewed connection with the fun-to-drive car mojo that once defined its lineup. Following the successful releases of the GR Supra and GR 86, the GR Corolla emerges as a thrilling addition, now offering an eight-speed automatic transmission alongside its standard six-speed manual.

DAT Gearbox: New Automatic Transmission

The standout feature of the 2025 GR Corolla is its new eight-speed automatic transmission, dubbed the Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT). This no-nonsense transmission promises quick shifts and optimal gear selection, relying more on driver inputs than vehicle dynamics. For those who prefer a hands-on approach, paddle shifters are available to manually pick the ratios. Unlike the dual-clutch automatic found in Volkswagen's Golf R, the GR Corolla's automatic is a traditional torque-converter unit, raising anticipation for a comparison of the "direct" feel between the two.

Enhanced Performance and Stability

The 2025 GR Corolla's 1.6-liter G16E-GTS engine now boasts 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, a notable 22 lb-ft increase from last year's Core and Circuit trims. This power upgrade is paired with the introduction of Launch Control for the new eight-speed auto, enhancing its performance capabilities.

Toyota has also refined the GR Corolla’s suspension, adding front and rear rebound springs, optimized rear suspension geometry, improved springs and anti-sway bar, and a new higher trailing arm pickup point. These changes aim to provide a flatter, more stable ride in fast corners, while maintaining the fun rally-car vibe in tighter, slower corners.

New Face and Cooling Enhancements

Models equipped with the automatic transmission feature a standard transmission fluid cooler. To accommodate this and other cooling components like the radiator, intercooler, and upgraded brake ducts, the front bumper has been redesigned. The GR Corolla’s new look is further enhanced by the bulged hood with air vents, standard on the Premium Plus model, adding to its aggressive, JDM-inspired appearance.

Upgraded Premium and New Premium Plus Trims

The 2025 GR Corolla Premium trim includes a supplementary heat exchanger, now standard on the new Premium Plus model. The Premium model also boasts GR-logo'd suede-trimmed seats with gray stitching, front and rear parking sensors, and two-zone climate control. Other features include JBL eight-speaker premium audio and a wireless phone charger. Exterior colors for the Premium trim are Ice Cap, Heavy Metal, Black, and Supersonic Red.

Replacing the discontinued Circuit Edition, the Premium Plus trim sits at the top of the lineup. It features a forged carbon-fiber roof, head-up display, red stitching, and Toyota-spec matte-black alloys. The blue accents from the Circuit model have been replaced, giving the Premium Plus a distinct look.

Core Model Updates

The 2025 Core base model sees minimal changes but benefits from the trickle-down of features previously standard on the middle trim. This includes front and rear torque-sensing limited-slip differentials and 18-inch wheels on performance tires.

Encouraging Performance Driving

Toyota includes a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) with the purchase of a 2025 GR Corolla. This membership offers benefits such as a free High Performance Driving Event and discounted admission to NASA races, encouraging owners to enhance their driving skills.

Arrival and Pricing

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla, arriving in winter 2024, continues to impress with new standard GR-branded red painted brake calipers and fresh interior trim finishes. Pricing details will be announced closer to the launch date, but one thing is certain: every version of the GR Corolla promises a thrilling driving experience, showcasing Toyota’s performance arm at its finest.
